In the fall of 2011 we started Outrun Hunger (a 5K fun run/ race for charity) with the goal of raising enough money to feed 100 families during the holidays. At that inaugural event 100% of the race registrations went towards our goal. In addition, a number of local area businesses donated time and services for the event. The results shattered all of our expectations:
Exciting results, but our job isn’t done. According to our partner organizations, approximately 1,345 families walk through their doors in need of food during November and December. The “demand” often overwhelms the “supply” — which you can read about here. The two organizations that we donated the proceeds of the race to also wrote us letters explaining the impact made by Outrun Hunger.
In 2013 we hope to serve even more families than we did in 2012. Our goal remains the same — to be a catalyst for “outrunning hunger” in the Lakes Region of Southeast Michigan.
